Sewer lines in Boise's older neighborhoods
Much of the North End, East End, and Bench was built out between 1900 and 1960, and the sewer laterals from that era are clay tile or Orangeburg, a tar impregnated fiber pipe that softens and collapses with age. Clay joints every few feet give the mature street trees an easy way in, and root intrusion is the most common thing we find on camera there. Cast iron from the 1960s and 1970s rusts through at the bottom and develops bellies where the soil has settled. Newer subdivisions in Meridian use PVC, which holds up well. What is trenchless sewer lining?
A resin soaked liner is pulled or inverted into the existing pipe and cured in place, creating a smooth new pipe inside the old one. It works when the old pipe still holds its shape. It does not work on collapsed sections.
Can roots be removed without replacing the pipe?
Yes, for a while. Cabling with a root cutter or hydro jetting clears them, but they grow back through the same joints. Lining or replacement is the permanent fix. We will tell you which one your line is a candidate for.
Will you have to dig up my driveway?
